Noted film music director Johnson passeda away Thursday. He has done music for over 100 films.

Johnson was born in a musically affluent Christian family in Nellikkunnu, Thrissur, Kerala, on 26 March 1953. His father was a Bank employee. Johnson was a singer in the choir of Nellikkunnu St. Sebastain's Church. He obtained training in guitar and harmonium from his colleagues during this early periods itself. He used to sing in youth festivals and musical shows and joined the orchestra team of some local troupes and played harmonium in many concerts. He also used to sing in the female voice in ganamelas(a stage show where film songs are sung by local or proffessional artists). Johnson once in an interview recalled that his remuneration was just Rs. 10 per show during this time.
In 1968, Johnson and his friends formed a club named Voice of Thrissur. Johnson was the main instrumentalist in the club where he played wide varieties of instruments - guitar, harmonium, flute, drums and violin. Within a few years, the club became one of the most sought after musical troups in Kerala, and had more than fifty members. This club used to give accompaniment music to playback singers Jayachandran and Madhuri in their musical shows. It was Jayachandran who introduced Johnson to G. Devarajan, one of the most prolific composers of South Indian cinema then. Devarajan literally adopted Johnson and brought him to Chennai in 1974. Johnson bought an accordion, during this period, from R. K. Shekhar (A. R. Rahman's father), and began assisting Devarajan in filmscoring and composing. The "Johnson effect" can be easily noted in Devarajan's songs and film scores of this period.
Johnson is married to Rani and has two children, Shan and Renn.

Johnson  was an Indian film score composer and music director who has given music to some of the most important motion pictures of Malayalam cinema, including those for Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, Oru Minnaminunginte Nurunguvettam, Vadakkunokkiyantram, Perumthachan, Amaram, Manichitrathazhu, Njan Gandharvan, Ponthan Mada, and Bhoothakkannadi. He was noted for his lyrical and expressive melodies together with simple but rich tonal compositions of thematic music. Johnson is a recipient of National Film Awards twice and Kerala State Film Awards five times.
He started his career as an assistant to G. Devarajan in 1970s,[1] and debuted as an independent composer in late seventies with Aaravam.[2] He was a recurrent collaborator for directors Padmarajan, Bharathan, Sathyan Anthikkad, T. V. Chandran, Kamal, Lohithadas, Balachandra Menon and Mohan.[2] He has composed music for more than 300 Malayalam films, the most by any composer except for Devarajan.[2] He died at Chennai on August 18, 2011 due to a heart attack.[3]

Awards

Johnson won the National Film Award for Best Background Score for the films Ponthan Mada (1994) and Sukrutham (1995).[9] Johnson is the only musician to get this rarely given award twice. He was the first Malayalee music composer to receive an award in music category and is also the only Malayalee music director who received two national awards in music category. He has received three Kerala State Film Award for Best Music Director, for the films Ormakkayi (1982), Vadakkunokkiyantram and Mazhavil Kavadi (1989), and Angane Oru Avadhikkalathu (1999). He was awarded the Kerala State Film Award for Best Background Music for the films Sadayam (1992) and Sallapam (1996). He has thus received five Kerala State Film Awards in music category, an achievement he shares with Devarajan. He has received the Kerala Film Critics Awards four times, the most recent in 2008 for Gulmohar. In 2007, he won the Mathruboomi Award for Best Music Director for Photographer (2006).[10] He won the Mullasserry Raju Music Award for the song "Enthe Kannanu Karuppu Niram", also from the same film. In addition, he has received numerous other awards and nominations including Devarajan Master Memorial Award and Raveendran Master Memorial Award.[11] In addition, he has received numerous other awards and nominations including Devarajan Master Memorial Award and Raveendran Master Memorial Award.

Arrivaal, Chuttika Nakshatram movie stills, news, review, cast & crew, wallpaper

First it was the triumphant ‘Big B’, and then ‘Saagar Alias Jacky’ and ‘Anwar’….Director Amal Neerad, who has already built a young fans group for himself, with his differently styled movies, has been in the lookout for a different but effective name for his new movie. Now the director seems to have finalised his title of the fourth movie, featuring Megastar Mammootty and Prithviraj as ‘Arrivaal, Chuttika Nakshtram’.(‘Hammer, Sickle and star’, the election symbol of CPI(M), the biggest political party of the state)
While hearing this title, many of the fellow students of Maharajahs college will remember the political leniency of the director Amal and writer Shankar Ramakrishnan in their college days. But don’t expect the new movie to a political flick. Infact ‘Arrivaal, Chuttika Nakshatram’ will be a thriller with subtle political back grounding of the forties and fifties, when the country was passing through the independence days. Naturally the movie will have references about the party spirits and revolts that marked the season.
‘Arrivaal, chuttika nakshatram’ will also feature another big artist from the south as the heroine. The writer of the movie Shankar Ramakrishnan, who devised a stunner with ‘Urumi’ is said to have almost completed the scripts. The makers of the movie are now fixing the final cast and crew of the movie, expected to start its shoot by the end of November.

Markandeyan movie review, stills, cast & crew, wallpaper

Starring: Sabarish, Pinky, Nivedhita, Santhanam, M S Baskar, Nizhalgal Ravi
Direction: FEFSI Vijayan
Music: Sundar C Babu
Production: FEFSI Vijayan

What happens when a dad directs his son with the sole aim of promoting him? We have seen the results of such efforts all too often. Projecting the son as the next biggest thing in Tamil cinema! Markandeyan is another film made with this objective. So, does it go down the expected road of offspring glorification or is there something different?
Unfortunately, the answer to the above question is a big and emphatic NO. We have seen what happens to cinema when a stunt master tries to launch his son as an action hero. There will be loads and loads of acrobatic and violent stunts which are made with the sole purpose of leaving the audience spellbound and clapping for the hero. Remember what happened when Jaguar Thangam launched his son through Suryaa. Something similar, though not as bad, is seen here. The film is built on a wafer thin plot of a gangster adopting a boy (Sabarish), from the streets, a rivalry that crops up between the real son of the gangster and the boy who is by now the most promising member of the gang; in line to become the next chief hooligan. A romantic track is thrown in and the gangster’s son is brought into the picture because of his rather lurid sexual tastes. A very well hatched plot is executed by the gangster to diffuse a situation which could see his son getting bashed up and killed up by his trusted lieutenant. The plot goes according to plan, but then backfires as Sabarish sees through it. This is in fact the only point of intelligence and interest in the entire movie.
The rest of it is just a cocktail of punches, flying kicks and gunfights. OK, the action is good. But, what good is an action scene when the central plot is not able to adequately justify it or build any kind of sympathy for the characters. How different does it get from watching a video game were one man keeps walking up and down killing everyone who appears in front of him? Really, it is the lack of a coherent and well planned script that spells doom for Markandeyan. The director, for all his experience in cinema, has tried to build an awe inspiring building without getting the foundation right. Result, a collapse! The fundamentals of film making have been overlooked in lieu of some spirited action. Now, action is hardly a substitute for a substantial plot.
There is nothing much to talk about in the performance section because it is all about Sabarish and his skills. Others are just there as fillers. The debutante does what is required to make us believe that he can do well if given the right script. He fights hard, dances with enthusiasm and emotes in a way that is not too bad for a novice. For those of you who thought that Santhanam’s presence can liven up any film, this is an antithesis. He fails to make us smile. But, surprisingly, where Santhanam failed, M.S. Bhaskar scores, bringing out some of the funniest moments of the movie. That just about sums up the positives of the film!
Technically, there is not much that deserves mention except for the effort of the crew to make the action sequences. It is a neatly done job. Music by Sundar C Babu is a bit of a let down, there is not much that gets you hooked.
Overall, Markandeyan is a typical dad’s gift to his son. Looks like the director lost objectivity of vision in his bid to promote his son as a talented hero. Talented as he may be, the script plays the villain, even more menacing than the one that they managed to put into the movie and pulls it down altogether. It might be worth remembering that even the most talented of actors need a solid script behind them to produce a hit.

Dookudu movie stills, news, trailer, cast & crew, wallpaper

The audio of Dookudu which was slated for August 13 was put off to August 18. This was announced by the producers. In a press release issued to the media, the producers say, ‘The main reason for the delay is due to the quality and technical issues in the final master disc. The entire team doesn’t want any gap between the audio release function and the availability of CDs in the market. There was a lots of discussions in this regard and finally decided to postpone the audio launch to August 18 and we are making sure that the audio CDs would be made available from the next day in the market.

Cast: Mahesh Babu, Samantha, Prakash Raj, Sonu Sood, Brahmanandam, Sayaji Shinde, Nazar, Vennela Kishore and others Direction: Srinu Vytla
We guessed it right. Dookudu is really a big leap in Mahesh brand entertainment. There is, delightfully, a bonus. The film is a big leap in Vytla brand entertainment as well. To put it in a nutshell, this awesome film has got everything which you might have expected to see in Khaleja (2010) but did not find in it. Dookudu has got everything – comedy, action, romance. On the top of it, there is an intelligent screenplay that coalesces adrenaline punches with comic drama and sentiment. And when the sentiment involves a superstar like Mahesh Babu and an ace like Prakash Raj, who strike a perfect chemistry on screen, you cannot ask for more. It would be far-fetched to even suggest that Dookudu is a classic, as the hero had wanted it to be, but it is indubitably a must-watch film.
Shankar Narayan (Prakash Raj) is a people’s man, a Godfather for the inhabitants of Shankar Nagar, Hyderabad. Some villains (Kota Srinivas Rao and company) conspire to eliminate him and get rid of him successfully (though it turns out to be a temporary success). As it happens in every other film, the do-gooder father’s son Ajay (Mahesh Babu) grows to be a heroic cop and is based in Mumbai. He and his team (headed by the inept Nasser) are on a hunt for the dreaded underworld don Nayak (Sonu Sood looks old but his performance is routinely fresh). Team Ajay head to Istanbul, Turkey, to nab Guru Talwar, Nayak’s aide, to eventually catch hold of the big fish.

Twenty minutes into the film, uninterrupted action and edge-of-the-seat drama gives way to a pleasant romantic track involving Mahesh and Samantha (as the wannabe fashionista Prashanthi). As Ajay and co prepare to outsmart Talwar, Shastri garu (Vennela Kishore as Mahesh’s junior cop) makes us laugh by gushing about his Bamma, who has got a talent for predicting things as they will happen. This goes to show that Vaitla never rmisses an opportunity pepper the proceedings with humor).
Some dialogues (Kona Venkat) show traces of Trivikram-style satire and humour in Istanbul. While Mahesh goes verbose (well, he says he has got noti doola), displaying much more maturity as an actor than he did in Khaleja, Samantha adds the glamour quotient. The monumental beauty of Istanbul, resplendent with magnificent buildings which form the backdrop in a duet, lends a rich feel. (Thank the camera of Guhan).
It is not long before Ajay completes his Operation Istanbul and returns to Hyderabad. It is at this stage that Vaitla introduces his brand of comedy. The film is now set in the house in which Shankar Narayan lived. Shankar is back in the house but his return is kept in the dark. Ajay wants to make his father, who had lived in coma for years, happy by creating a make-believe world of lies around him.
The rest of the film is all about how Ajay accomplishes the task of annihilating every villain who had backstabbed and wanted his father to be dead. Thankfully, the drama and action are not routine. They are laced with rib-tickling comedy and touching sentimentality. Vaitla blends all the commercial ingredients in his inimitable style and makes Dookudu an enjoyable fare for all and how?
Well, here it is how he does it. Much like Dhee, Ready and King, this film too sees the the hero making everyone live in a fool’s paradise: things go as the hero wants them. Nayak marvels at old Telugu classics and Ghantasala’s rendition of the Gita; Brahmanandam, who believes that he is part of a reality show (this one, believe us, is top class), has you in splits as he is fooled around without a respite; MS Narayana’s spoofing of Magadheera and Simha is superb; Prime Minister NTR, speaking on the ramparts of Red Fort in chaste Telugu, promises to bring black money back; Master Bharath participates in multi-crore land dealings and brings smiles. Even a get-to-gether of Mahesh, Samantha’s families becomes an occasion for comedy of lies and bakras. Episodic treatment keeps your interest alive. Every murder comes with a touch of humour. Welcome to the world of Srinu Vaitla.
As for the performances, Mahesh delivers one of his career bests. He can now safely claim, without inviting ridicule, that Dookudu is a slap on the face of those who declared that he is not good at comedy. He shows verve and energy in action scenes. He is convincing in the khaddar get-up. He is remarkable at spouting one-liners as the super-efficient cop. He is trigger-happy, but is immediately funny in taking digs at his stupid senior Nasser.
All comedians and character artists do justice to their roles. On the flip side, however, Samantha is not seen much in the second half. But when she sizzles on the screen in Itu Raye number, you swoon.
Tehnicially, it is proof what a Digital Intermediate finish can make a film look like. It is visually rich.
Post Script: Babu land aithe opposition ku bande, Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam says to a frightened Sonu Sood. Prince proves he is Numero Uno. The fight for top slot is over. Cool.
