Nandi awards 2010 announced ..... today film news

Five films – Ye Maya Chesave, Simha, Gangaputrulu, Maryada Ramanna, Varudu – bagged three Nandi Awards each this year. While Balakrishna bagged the Best Leading Actor Male for ‘Simha’, Nitya Menon secured the Best Leading Actor Female award for ‘Ala Modalayindi’.
Vedam directed by Krish with Allu Arjun and Manchu Manoj in the lead roles bagged the Best Feature Film Award. ‘Prasthanam’ directed by Deva Katta bagged the third best film award.
‘Maryada Ramanna’ bagged ‘Best popular feature film providing wholesome entertainment’ award, while Nagineedu achieved the best villain, though he made his debut in ‘Maryada Ramanna’.
Chakri grabbed the Nandi for best music for ‘Simha’. Another music director Keeravani bagged award as best playback singer in ‘Maryada Ramanna’. Though failed commercially, ‘Parama Veera Chakra’ bagged a Nandi award for ‘Best film on national integration’.

Pawan Kalyan is quite busy with his current assignment Kaali. He was busy completing an arduous schedule in Pollachi. Several crucial scenes were completed in this spell on the actor and his co-star Sarah Jane Dias. Now, the team is scheduled for yet another important schedule, for which they will be relocating to Karaikudi.
This Tamil Nadu town in Sivaganga district will see him filming for a couple of scenes and a song with his another co-star of the film, Anjali Lavania. The film is an intense drama with stories unfolding one after another in different locations. This is the reason why the director (Vishnuvardhan of Kollywood) has selected three different locations for filming various episodes.
Interestingly, besides the two heroines, a male character is significant in Kaali. Adivi Sesh, the debutante director-actor of Karma fame and brother of director Adivi Sai Kiran, is playing Pawan’s brother in the film.

After giving two successive hits like ‘Aha Naa Pellanta’ and ‘Seema Tapakai’ Allari Naresh is working hard for ‘Madatha Kaajaa’ with an aim to achieve a hattrick.
The successful comedy hero is pairing up with Sneha Ullal for the film under the direction of Sitaramaraju and produced by KL Damodar Prasad on the banner of Sri Ranjit Movies.
It is worth mentioning here that the producer had earlier brought out a successful film ‘Ala Modalaindi’ with Nithya Menon and Nani in the lead. It is learnt that ‘Madatha Khaja’ would also be a wholesome entertainer and the director is making efforts to give a different characterisation to Allari Naresh unlike his earlier films.
The shooting of ‘Madatha Khaja’ is presently progressing at a brisk pace.

The film unit of ‘Oosaravelli’ directed by Surender Reddy and produced by BVSN Prasad on the banner of Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra with Young Tiger NT Rama Rao and Tamanna in the lead roles left for Bangkok for its next schedule on August 4.
The director is planning to shoot some important scenes involving NTR and Prakash Raj for three days there. From there, the film unit would shift to Switzerland to can a couple of songs on NTR and Tamanna would join the team at Switzerland.
As per the film unit sources, the hero and heroine would return by August 15. Harika of ‘Payanam’-fame is playing another heroine in this movie, while ‘Kick’ Shaam is playing another important role.
Devisri Prasad gave some energetic songs for the movie.

Old is Gold, and it seems that the movie producers over at Hollywood agree to this facts of the ole. Just last week, they made a movie on Captain America, who could well be one of the oldest superheroes in the world, and today sees the release of The Smurfs, an old concept of little blue people, around three apples high. Here is a detailed review of the Smurfs (2011) review.

The Smurfs is based on a Belgian comic strip made back in the 1950s, and in this movie were immediately introduced to the Smurf village, and the various characters in it. And with this we are introduced to the Galgamesh, the arch nemesis wizard who wants to take the ‘essence’ of the Smurfs to become the most powerful magician in the world.

To this end, he devises a magical map, which brings him to the Smurf Village, and while escaping from the attack, Clumsy Smurf leads a small group of Smurfs into a magical void, which brings them to New York. The Smurfs end up with an advertising executive, Patrick, and his wife, Grace, who is expecting their first child.
The one thing that they Smurfs want now is to go back to their village, but that is not as easy as it seems, not just because of the magic required, but also because Galgamesh has traveled in the void after them

I am Kalam is a movie coming from strange quarters. Made by The Smile Foundation and Century Ply, this is a quaint story of a young boy, who learns much more about the harshness of life than what would be enough for his age. Here is a complete review of the movie I am Kalam.

I am Kalam is about Chotu, a young boy who is sent to work at a roadside Inn in arid Udaipur, owned by Bhati and worked by Laptan, to make some money for him and his family. The Inn is just next to a royal palace, which has now been converted into a hotel for foreign tourists. While Chotu learns about the hardships that a poor boy experiences, the innkeeper has an innocent one sided romance with a foreigner, and another help in the Inn feels that he will lose his place if Chotu stays on for a longer time.  Laptan does not like Chotu a bit, and makes it clear to him the moment he comes into the Inn, but Chotu wins Bhati’s heart.

In this harried, unfair life, he comes across a young boy living in the palace, but is not allowed to meet others because his father still thinks that blue blood should not mingle with the commoners. In between all this, Chotu sees a Republic Day Parade, and sees the then President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam at the Red Fort during the Parade. Buoyed by the President’s words, the young boy decides to lead the life that APJ wants every child in this country to.

Things take a turn when Lucy, the foreigner wants to take Chotu to the city and admit him in a school. However, the mother and the Inn Keeper cannot think of such an occurrence, firstly because they are worried about what the woman wants to do with the boy, and secondly because he is useful to both of them.
Chotu also strikes a friendship with the lonely blue blood child in the palace, and this does not go well with the other people in the palace, and he finally is accused of stealing from the young boy, because nobody knew that they had struck a friendship.

I am Kalam has a good screenplay, and there is not a dull moment in the film, thanks for the numerous side stories that keep cropping up, and the genuinely funny moments at the Inn. The director has taken pains to depict the arid, dry desert at it is, and the earthy tones that he has used are a treat to watch. Even though I am Kalam tackles serious subjects like child labor, racism, cultural thuggery, it does not get preachy for even a moment.  The direction also succeeds in skimming across the stark realities in such a way that they are blatantly displayed – like the fact that Chotu’s family will starve to death if he does not work – so much for the ‘No Child Labor’ stickers all over Mumbai.

The performances of I am Kalam are refreshing. Right from Gulshan Grover and Pitobash to the two debutante actors playing the main protagonists, everyone excels in their role and brings a naïve, innocent freshness to the movie. But while the main characters act well, the screenplay and the storyline does not give time enough for any one of the characters to be described deeply. For example, we never know where Chotu’s father is, or for that matter the sudden change in the King’s mindset seems a bit farfetched.

You cannot judge Vachadu Gelichadu easily. This is not to talk about the screenplay, which falters very badly. This is not to make a point about the quality of performances, which are pedestrian barring Nanda’s. This is to drive home the point that the film’s concept, though interesting, sounds not only clichetic but also too mawkish to be entertaining for the modern audience.


Director R Kannan comes up with a good story to begin with. However, the format and the props leave much to be desired. You hope that the climax will have something interesting in store for you, but the twist disappoints you. If the first half builds up the tempo, the second half fails to sustain the momentum. Read on to know why.

It is Ramachandrapuram in 1995 where two school-going half-brothers, one brilliant at studies and the other a dim-wit, lead a life of rivalry. When the younger one burns the only photograph of the elder one’s late father, the latter decides to kill him by throwing him into a well.


Cut to the present, Arjun (Jiiva) comes to Mumbai to meet Ramana (Nanda), a dreaded goon. After making his way by swindling Santhanam, a beleaguered cook at Ramana’s house, Arjun begins narrating his love story to Ramana. Why Ramana entertains him and listens to his routine love story, sans any value for him, is a question for now, which is convincingly answered towards the end.


The first half ends up giving us some sugar rush moments as well as creating an element of suspense. Through the one hour, you keep guessing about Arjun’s intention and how Ramana is related to his story. The suspense is revealed just before the interval block: Ramana accidentally killed Anjana’s (Tapsee) father during a gang war and now Arjun demands that he surrenders to the police, sine qua non his lover would not marry him.


Will Arjun finally get his revenge? Why does Ramana tolerate the nuisance in the form of Arjun? Is there, above all, something more than what meets the eye? The second half satisfactorily answers all these questions, but not before subjecting you to a certain degree of torture.


Performance-wise, Vachadu Gelichadu fares ordinarily. Jiiva delivers a dull one, with neither his emotions nor dances really impressing. There is no depth in Tapsee’s acting. Santhanam, who tries to tickle the funny bone, is failed by the comedy scenes which hamper the pace. Nanda, however, stands out. He delivers a studied performance, without going over-board.


On the part of the director, he should have got his screenplay right. There are too many chinks in the proceedings. Songs are not placed well and are intrusive, with Thaman’s music touching an all-time low. Though sibling-relationship forms the soul of the film, emotions are superficial in the movie.


All in all, Vachadu Gelichadu fails to sustain the audience’s attention in the second half, where it most needed to.

Age Of The Dragons had the potential to be gloriously trashy.  A reimagining of Moby Dick but with dragons instead of the titular white whale, and starring Danny Glover, this has got “Cult Classic” written all over it.  Unfortunately, it’s just as bad as it sounds but not bad enough to be ironically enjoyable.
The story will be familiar to anyone that’s read or seen the source material.  Whaler (or in this case Dragon Hunter) Ishmael (Corey Sevier) and his companion Queequeg (Kepa Kruse) board the ship Peaquod (this time a mobile fort on wheels) run by the enigmatic Captain Ahab (Danny Glover), a figure shrouded in legend after a white dragon killed his sister and left him disfigured. His crew is comprised of tough guy Stubbs (Vinnie Jones), the reasonable veteran Starbuck (David Morgan) and the hot-headed and clear liability Flask (Larry Bagby).  In a departure, they’re joined by Rachel (Sofia Pernas), Ahab’s hard-as-nails adopted daughter, as they set out for the desolate northern wastes to wreak Ahab’s revenge on the dragon that scarred him.
The presence of Danny Glover might be enough to tempt some people to see this – many cinemagoers will have fond memories of his action roles in Lethal Weapon or even Predator 2 but here he chews scenery as if it were gum, growling overwritten lines with more gravel than Christian Bale’s Batman, a feat which probably kept Strepsils afloat through their entire last quarter.
The largely unknown cast look like they could have stepped out of a cosmetics commercial, all sparkling white teeth and flawless complexions.  Consequently, it feels either like a) a feature length episode of Xena or the even less well known Adventures Of Sinbad or b) like the cast of Beverley Hills 90210 have decided to go for an adventure weekend. The acting is utterly appalling, lines are delivered so woodenly, it’s difficult to tell whether it’s the scenery or the characters which are speaking and it’s hard not to raise a critical eyebrow when some of the best work is done by Vinnie Jones. There’s also a crippling lack of consistency.  At one point Ishmael defends Rachel from an attack and while he’s engaged in the subsequent fight, she stands there like a pathetic ingénue despite having beaten seven kinds of snot out of a gang of muggers only half an hour previously.
For a film which promises dragons, they feature curiously little and when they do appear they resemble cast offs from ITV’s Primeval.  Their appearance almost always leaves the cast transfixed: glassy stares are either actors struggling to be afraid of something that isn’t actually there or puzzlement at the fact that the dragons look more like giant bats than fire-breathing beasts of legend.
Age Of The Dragons is a limp, unimpressive sham of a movie, an embarrassment to Danny Glover’s CV and almost certain to be broadcast on schlock channel Movies 24 in the near future.  Don’t call me Ishmael, we’ll call you.
