Salim Kumar Top Comedian to The Real BEST ACTOR of INDIA. A few years back, when Salim Kumar was chosen as the second best actor by the state government for his role in 'Achanurangatha Veedu', quite a few murmurs were heard. That time the actor was confined to doing mere slapstick comedy which hardly exploited his mettle as an actor. The character Samuel in 'Achanaurangatha Veedu' was a rare opportunity for the actor to prove what he really is. Basking in the glory of winning the national award for his exemplary performance in 'Adaminte Makan Abu', which will be released next month, Salim now stands tall as an actor in Indian cinema and has given a strong message to his critics who treated his acting skills as mere mimicry. Salim Kumar, who began his career by donning a comic cameo in Sidhique Shameer’s ‘Ishtamanu Nooruvattam’ in 1996, has so far portrayed more than 100 characters. The 2000-release ‘Thenkashippattanam’ proved to be the lucky trump for the actor and established him as a much sought-after comedian in Malayalam filmdom. With a strong presence in commercial flicks in Mollywood over the last ten years, the actor used to create waves of laughter in theatres through his simple tricks. His characters – advocate Mukundanunni in ‘Meesha Madhavan’ and Kannan Srank in ‘Mayavi’ - were rated equivalent to some of the best-ever comedy performances in Malayalam. Looking at the body of work he has done over a period of time, it is noticeable that Salim Kumar actually got only a few opportunities to enact character roles. Samuel in ‘Achanaurangatha Veedu’, Manikandan in ‘Kerala Café’ and Aamu Elappa in ‘Perumazhakkalam’ are some of the films which tapped his acting skills. ‘Adaminte Makan Abu’ has presented Salim Kumar as a director’s actor. He is the first known comedian from Malayalam to win a national award. The character Abu aka Aboottikka, who sells Athar (perfume) near mosques, dreams of performing Haj as the ultimate in life. In what could be called a metamorphosis, Abu and Salim Kumar show justice to each other. “Like every other Keralite, I too am proud. The award is also a reward for the out-of-the-box thinking of director Salim Ahmed. It is true that there are not many people who come forward to making these sort of movies that will give an opportunity for actors like me to perform,” said Salim Kumar. Salim Ahmed said that the award was a great recognition to a debutant director like him. “Salim Kumar’s performances in ‘Kerala Café’(BRIDGE) and ‘Perumazhakkalam’ are strong indicators which made me identify the character Abu in him,” he added

He is known for his comic roles. But Salim Kumar has surprised the viewers with some heart wrenching performances in films like Achanurangatha Veedu, Perumazhakkalam and also in Anwar Rasheed’s film Bridge in Kerala Café. It is his role as a 75 year old Muslim man in Adaminte Makan Abu that fetched him the National award for the best actor, which was announced on May 19.

Salim started his journey as an actor performing mimicry. After his entry into the big screen, he soon became an integral part of Malayalam cinema as a comedian.
